What is a Visitor Visa?
A Visitor Visa is issued to individuals who wish to visit Canada for an extended period of time (as a temporary resident). It is an official document from the Government of Canada that is placed within your passport to show you have met the requirements and been approved to be in Canada as a non-citizen or non-resident. Typically, individuals may apply for a visitor visa if they are coming to reunite with family, as a business visitor, to take a long holiday, or to visit corporate partners for business opportunities.
Each visitor visa includes an expiry date, at which time the visitor must leave Canada. Most visas are valid for up to 6 months unless a border security officer has stamped your passport for a longer or shorter period of time. This date will be displayed in the stamp you may receive in your passport. If you do not receive a stamp upon entry, your stay will be valid for either 6 months after the day you arrive, or until your passport expires if this comes before the 6 month period.
If you arrive in Canada and wish to stay longer than the expiry date of your visa, you may apply for a visitor record to extend your stay. This must be done before your visitor visa expires, and will contain a new expiry date that indicates when you will be required to return home.
